“They say your home is your castle,” says Scott Gillen, designer, builder and creator of Scott Gillen/Unvarnished. “Castles belong on mountains. So I bought a mountain.”
That was the starting point for The New Castle, one of more than a dozen architecturally significant residences that make up The Malibu Series by Unvarnished. Yet there is far more to this property than its proud location on an ocean promontory overlooking Santa Monica Bay.
On entry, the eye is immediately drawn to the 450-bottle wine room and adjacent cigar lounge, two intricate arrangements of teak and glass that frame ocean views beyond. A few steps away, the great room flows out to a 75ft pool with three infinity edges – the castle’s moat in Gillen’s vision. Throughout the property, high walls of glass frame different relationships between land, sea and sky, while hand-hewn wooden floors, doors, ceiling beams and custom cabinets bring the natural world indoors.
The New Castle is a showcase for Gillen’s signature style, which blends mid-century modern influences with more laid-back, liveable elements. “For years, I’ve put everything into turning my ideas and dreams into reality,” says Gillen. “I want always to push myself to do more, be better.”
Other homes in The Malibu Series include The What – one of four contemporary masterpieces within gated hillside enclave The Who – and Case Study No. 3, one of five bluff-top properties in The Case, inspired by the Case Study Houses of the late 1950s and 1960s.
Case Study No. 3 is located in its own two-and-a-half-acre gated estate. The property has white oak floors, a bespoke Bulthaup kitchen and a dramatic great room with a wall of glass opening to an expansive deck with a 100ft infinity pool.
“Some people call my approach artisanal,” says Gillen. “I call it doing things the way they should be done. My focus on results equates to a product that is nothing short of awe-inspiring.”
