The privacy and singular clifftop setting of this Algarve estate is perfectly illustrated by the story of how it came into owner Jose Gil’s family in the first place.
“The house was built in 1972 by an American architect,” says Gil. “Around a year later, my wife’s grandfather was sailing along the coast and saw the house. That view from the ocean convinced him to buy it immediately.”
At that time, the traditionally styled villa was set in around one hectare. Over time, the family bought more land and extended the villa to the four-hectare estate that is now on the market.
“You cannot find a setting and plot size like this anywhere in the Algarve,” says Gil. “For me, the privacy you find here is special. Whenever there are guests staying, they just love being here and rarely want to go anywhere else – maybe the nearby town of Carvoeiro. Sometimes, we never set foot off the property, which makes it a fabulous spot during the summer.”
The large estate contains three separate plots. The main house sits on the largest plot and has a built area of 728 sq m. Traditional in character and rustic in style, the Moorish villa is built over one level with light, spacious rooms – many separated by courtyards and outdoor spaces that really come into their own during the summer months when the house can effectively double in size.
The stunning clifftop location is a magnificent backdrop to the sprawling estate, which includes a tennis court, small cottage, a generous swimming pool overlooking the ocean, attractive and mature gardens full of Mediterranean flora, as well as various areas to relax and enjoy the views.
There is also the possibility of building on the other two plots (up to 471 sq m and 425 sq m) thanks to the family’s foresight. “In 2006, it became impossible to build so close to the cliffs, says Gil. “However, we already had permits by that time so there is the chance to extend the property. That said, I think the value of the property is when it’s all together because of the high level of privacy.”
As well as absolute privacy, the estate has around 350m of ocean front, providing unobstructed views of the coastline and ocean.
“The cliffs are 40 to 50m above the sea, but there are paths from the property down to the beach,“ says Gil. “Some you can walk down, others are accessible by a small all-terrain vehicle, which is handy when you’re returning to the house.”
The location and size of this Algarve estate are unrivalled. Alison Buechner Hojbjerg, Director of QP Savills, unhesitatingly describes it as one of her favourite properties in 21 years of dealing with the Algarve’s best homes.
But what is Jose’s favourite feature? “It’s a special place to unwind and relax,” he says. “It’s perfect for anyone who loves having friends over and entertaining. As for the sunsets, particularly in the winter, those are simply priceless.”
