Tell us what makes Ojai so special.
Answers from Gideon Lang-Laddie, agent, at Savills associate The Agency.
Ojai is a year-round escape from the pace of Hollywood. It’s the place to go for healthy living and is seen by many as a spiritual mecca.
The area is popular with artists, musicians, health devotees, tech gurus, and Hollywood A-listers, such as Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, who owned this property a few years ago. Ojai offers access to stunning real estate, and the healthiest of environments, without a hint of commercialisation.
There are miles of trails for horseriding, hiking and cycling. There are tremendous views from the mountain tops right out to the ocean – which is just 15 miles away. Local spas offer opportunities to relax, and there’s great local produce to enjoy, from citrus fruit and avocado, to olive oil and wine.
Living here, you can unwind and feel that your privacy will not be invaded. That is particularly the case at this 5.17-acre estate which sits behind two sets of electric gates, and is further secluded by established trees and shrubbery.
What are the best features of the property?
There is a sense of tranquility and paradise about this place, that sets in the moment you arrive. The views and gardens are spectacular, and to have more than five acres, approximately one mile from the centre of Ojai, is an incredible opportunity.
And what about the magical ‘pink moment’?
The pink moment is the brief period just prior to the sun setting, when the mountains to the north of Ojai emit a soft glow, which turns the surrounding valley shades of pink and red. Properties with a mountain view and exposure to the pink moment generally command a premium. There are spectacular pink moment views from around this estate.
What relationship is there with the historic Ojai Foothills Hotel?
The property sits on part of the historic Foothills Hotel site, which in the early 20th century was a haven for wealthy east-coasters, who would often over-winter at the hotel. It is believed that guests had to apply in advance for accommodation, a process that included submitting copies of bank statements, to gain approval. The Hotel also hosted the first Frost-Coolidge Music Festival, in 1926. This festival is believed to be what eventually became the famed Ojai Music Festival.
What are the property’s eco-credentials?
The garden is irrigated entirely by water sourced from its own private well. This helps maintain the lush, green lawns, and the flowerbeds. It also ensures that the fruit trees are full of crops, and the vegetable beds provide for the healthiest of meals. The garden lights, spa, and pool (heated to a constant 30 degrees) are all powered by the property’s solar panels. Add to this the abundance of visiting wildlife, and one has an idyllic eco-estate.
What are the most compelling features?
The current owners have improved and modernised most of the home. With artwork from around the world, and only the finest furnishings (many of which are custom to the house). There is a sense of peace that carries from the front lawn, through every room, up the sweeping staircase, and out to the rose flowerbeds and woodpeckers in the trees. The property layout, artwork and furnishings complement this delightful retreat.
