Extending out into the aquamarine waters of Antigua’s south coast, the Windward Estate sits on a stretch of natural hillside and beach coastline. Nestled between Pigeon Point and Windward Bay – two of Antigua’s most beautiful south coast beaches – it’s one of the most stunning locations in the Caribbean.
One person who is very familiar with the 93-acre estate is Paul Belmondo, son of French actor Jean-Paul Belmondo. In fact, he calls it home. “My family bought a house on Windward in the early 1970s,” says Belmondo. “For many years, it was the only property on the estate, but in 2006 I started to think that this would be an amazing place to create a special development.”
The appeal is easy to appreciate. Just 30 minutes from Antigua’s international airport, this idyllic location offers privacy and seclusion, yet is close to some of the island’s most vibrant restaurants, shops and nightlife.
Much of this is based around nearby English Harbour. Yacht crews take advantage of the warm trade winds that have guided sailors to this natural harbour for centuries, making it the sailing hub of the Caribbean. As such, there’s an energy around the bars and restaurants by the marina, particularly during the prestigious regattas that are now a feature of the sailing season.
“Antigua is a lovely island,” says Belmondo. “It’s big enough to have everything you need, but small enough to remain authentic. It took us some time to start developing Windward because we wanted to make the right decisions for the type of development and property.”
The 93 acres of reserve offer buyers a choice between finished properties and individual plots approved for high-end villas. Hillside plots in phase one of the project have already been completed, while work is under way on beachside and hillside villas in phase two.
“Every property has a sea view – some look out to English Harbour, others to Falmouth Harbour,” says Belmondo. “Three plots will have 360-degree views of it all.
“We can manage every stage of development for the owner – from day one until they move in. So, we find the architect, import materials, even help create the interior design if they wish.”
The Windward Estate is accessible only to property owners and guests, with round-the-clock security. The community will also include a charming boutique hotel, tennis court and Catherine’s Café on Pigeon Point Beach, arguably the smartest, most chilled beach club on the island.
“Pigeon Point is the main public beach on the south coast and a favourite for both locals and visitors,” says Belmondo. “Its calm, shallow waters make it ideal for families. Windward Bay is wilder, more secluded. It has a rugged beauty and, for me, is one of Antigua’s best-kept secrets.”
